Douglas Fairbanks (1883–1939), the charismatic star of The Mark of Zorro, Robin Hood, and The Thief of Bagdad, was one of the founders of United Artists and is widely regarded as the world's first great action movie star. During Hollywood's Golden Age, Fairbanks made Townhouse 204 at the historic Los Altos Hotel & Apartments his home.

Originally built in 1925 as Los Angeles' first luxury cooperative apartment building, Los Altos featured individually designed residences rather than standardized apartments, attracting some of the entertainment industry's most celebrated personalities.
